Being back at work full time, and extremely busy, has left me with little to no time to bla bla bla on the blog these days it seems. I am promising myself that I will not let this place run down or become a monthly update spot but, like most thing, it will take time to figure out. In the meantime, this will be another general update post.
First a quick update on health related issues.

September Is Flying By!
The summer went by so quickly, and now we are already half way through September. Can you believe it? It will be Christmas before we know it! Back to school was CRAZY this year (which is why I haven’t been posting) but it is finally calming down! Now I get to play catch up from the last two weeks and try to get ahead on next week since I won’t be here all at once! Fun!
So, where were we last?
My birthday weekend was a blast! Not because of my birthday but because of the huge wedding the day before. My little bride was beautiful and the groom, casual and cool as always. And the flower girl was the cutest thing ever… my niece of course! The priest was half an hour late but kept things short and sweet and then it was on to the party. The hall was decorated beautifully, the food was very good, and things seemed to be perfect as far as I could tell. The happy couple is still on their honeymoon and I can’t wait for them to get back so we can look through all their pictures and see their new home! I miss you guys!
My birthday itself was quiet; a trip to the pet store and dinner at The Keg with DH. Exactly what I wanted! It hasn’t all turned out well though. I got a Betta and four Tetras for my new aquarium and by the following week they had all died! I think the Betta hunted the Tetras and then got sick from bacteria in the water. I tried to medicate him but he didn’t make it. Sigh. And, my gift from DH has been a total train wreck, but I am still working on that one so I won't bore you with the details just yet.
Labour Day weekend we went camping in Lake Placid again with our new big tent and did a lot of nothing. It was nice to do nothing for once! Of course I had to get sick right before we left but the fresh air actually seemed to help a lot. I think I have a new cure for my constant sinus infections!
Also on Labour Day weekend, my nephew finally made his appearance! He didn’t like August it seems so he chose September 1st! Unfortunately his first couple of weeks haven’t gone as expected, and he still hasn’t seen his beautiful room that his Mommy and Daddy built for him, but hopefully he will go home soon! In either case, I am on my way there this weekend to meet him for the first time and I can’t wait!
To replace the Betta/Tetra disaster, I went out yesterday and bought two Angel Goldfish instead. They should be more resilient so we will see how this goes… I consider them to be like goats of the sea – eat anything and not care if the water isn’t perfect – so hopefully these ones will last longer!
Anyhow, that’s it for now. Break over, back to work!

Open Letter: Betta Fish

As most people know by now, I am obsessed with Betta fish! DH got me one about four years ago and I have had at least one, often two, ever since. Usually they live for quite some time under my care, or they die incredibly fast so I assume they are sick before I even get them. However, my current fish (Romeo) is driving me crazy!!! He has been "playing dead" since about February now. I swore when I went on vacation then he would be dead by the time I returned but he is still alive, although you wouldn't know it from the way he looks! So, I started researching solutions again this morning and I came across a hilarious "open letter" someone wrote to their Betta and I just had to re-post it because I can relate so well!
An Open Letter to My Dead Betta Fish, Daisy, by Shawna Foster
Dear Daisy,
When the worker fell through our ceiling, he thought of everything he could. He immediately vacuumed up all the insulation that had been rotting in our rafters since the 1950s and now covered our home like snowfall. He sucked so hard he broke the Dyson. He cleaned every speck of dust on all the surfaces he could see, anticipating our intense rage of a 6 × 3 foot man-shaped hole in the ceiling.
He did not think of you, Daisy. He did not realize that your fancy fountain open-top tank allowed pounds of insulation to fall in. The material possessions did not matter to me as much as you did, Daisy, but he didn’t think of you. You didn’t give a shit then, Daisy. You’re a Betta fish. Shit falls in your tank and you eat it. You ate a lot of insulation, Daisy. And you were doomed. So why did you take so long to die?

Betta Battle Pt. 2

I finally managed to get a decent picture of my new fish!!! He doesn't stop moving around long enough for me to get a good shot so I had to film him and extract a picture that way. Nothing but trouble this one, huh?
Anyhow... introducing... Romeo!

Betta Battle

For those of you who don’t know, I am obsessed with Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish). I have consistently had two of them at a time for the last 4 years (each usually lives about 2.5 years on average) and I had a couple previously as well.
A couple of weeks ago, one of them died after a LONG battle with something I could never really identify. Jack seemed to be sick since the day I got him a year and a half ago (when the last Pirates of the Caribbean came out – hence the name). A couple of days after he died, after sanitizing his tank and preparing it for a new fish, I went to a pet store that I do not normally buy from although it is the same chain I go to. They have 48 hour guarantees on their fish and unfortunately this fish barely made it 36 hours! Long story short, the conditions they had him in and the conditions I put him in (the right ones) shocked his system. Anyhow, they told me that I could bring him back but I couldn’t get there for a number of days due to a knee injury preventing me from driving. So what did they tell me to do? Put him in the freezer! Yes, that’s right… in a bag, in the freezer! No refund without a fish in hand; don’t even get me started! Anyhow, then the person I talked to on the phone wasn’t there that night as he said he would be, naturally, so I had to have a battle as to why I was there four days after the fish died. Eventually they agreed to give me a credit note instead of a refund and I left without buying a new fish from them because I didn’t want to go through all of that again.
Fast forward to this past weekend… I go to the shop I usually get my fish from and find the most beautiful Betta I have ever seen – no joke. I asked a sales person how much he is and he said that since he was a “show fish” he was twice the price. It was “Black Friday” weekend so I thought I would get a discount but no, he was twice the usual price. I didn’t care, I wanted that fish! As I was debating for a second, someone walked by and asked me if I was buying him. YES! Decision made, he is mine! He kept walking and said “enjoy!” as he walked away. I asked the sales guy if he could hang onto him for me for a minute because I wanted to look at the others too because I was debating getting a second fish from them (yes, even though I had one at home still). He said sure… and not a minute later he came to tell me that another guy sold my fish! I turned around and, sure enough, he was in a bag ready to go! I looked at who was buying it and it was the same guy who told me to enjoy! After a minute of protest he let me have him and my sales guy joked that we were in the cutthroat world of Betta fish! No kidding! I took my fish, went to the cash and was then told they won’t accept my credit note since another store issued it! At this point, I didn’t care; I just wanted to get out of there!!!
It is now two days later and I am happy to report that the new fish is very happy in his new home. Due to the drama that ensued over this fish I debated calling him Shakespeare, but decided on Romeo specifically instead! He was worth the battle! Now, if only I could get a decent picture of him!

Pets
As I have been saying all week, it is not a good week to be one of my pets right now!
Last Thursday I had to bring one of my cats to the vet because she had an awful smell coming from her mouth (she had it for a couple of months but it got way worse). The vet said that two of her canine teeth were infected and would have to be removed and that she also should get a cleaning - to the tune of 900$ and she gave me a referral. I booked her for tomorrow morning.
Then, earlier this week (Tuesday) I come home and one of my fish had died. He had been sick for a few weeks and I was doing everything I could to help him but he didn't make it. Usually my fish are buried out in the front garden, but since the ground was kind of frozen and my "pallbearer" is away for work again... I flushed my first fish *cry*.
And then more bad news tonight, or maybe it's good news? So I brought the cat in tonight so that they can treat her a bit overnight and then do the surgery early in the morning. I met with the vet/surgeon and find out that it's not just an infection she has but rather Feline Periodontal Disease! The good news is that it is being caught and treated earlier, the bad news is that she may lose more than just her canine teeth tomorrow and I have no clue what this will all mean long-term. I will be looking into it all soon though. And, because she will be under for such a long time they want to keep her another night for observation so I won't see her till Saturday.
The house is really quiet. We are down to my freaky cat, one little fish and myself.
